During my two weeks at Friends of Bishop Ryan summer camp, I felt like I was learning new stuff every day. This helped me become a better wrestler and learn how to take on challenges in life. I say this because every day in the morning after we get warmed up, we would learn new wrestling moves that you won’t really learn and practice during your regular wrestling season. After lunch, we would do situation drills where we are in a situation where we would have to use the new move we learned which helped us understand the move better. We learned how to respond to them on the offence and on defence. Then before lunch, we would have a classroom session. In the classroom, we learned how to analyze people wrestling, how to break down moves, what a team means, how to deal with bumps in your road and that you are never alone when on a team.
Another interesting aspect of this camp was the conditioning and weight training we did. We did the conditioning every morning by first running around the track field once. Next, we would do some exercises that would work on explosives movements which we repeated three times then we would do a circuit of a full body workout three times with a 30-second break in between each set. Sometimes we would focus on our foot movement and coordination. We also did weight training and focused on specific parts of our body and for each exercise, we would pick an appropriate weight that we could sustain for 5 sets of 5 reps. Each day we would alternate the days we lift to so our bodies could rest. I highly recommend this camp to anyone interested in wrestling or becoming a better wrestler.
